Customer service and support is often the most crucial deciding factor for many when choosing host.  Look for a host that provides telephone and email support.  Many also offer live chat support which can come in handy.  They should also offer 24/7 support.

Uptime

Before signing up for a host do a bit of research to see if your host has a good uptime record.  Try a Google search with the hosts name and the keyword “downtime”.  Make sure they offer an uptime guarantee were they will refund your payment if they go down or have less than 99.9% uptime.

Control Panel

Look for a host that meets your needs - what scripts will you be using?  Do you require special plugins, features etc.  The majority of hosts of cPanel as the backend which I highly recommend.  MediaTemple also has a brilliant control panel.

Guarantee

Finally, look for a “30 day guarantee” where the host will refund your purchase if you are not satisfied.  This is a great way to try out hosts and don’t be afraid to ask for your money back.
